A quick update and bit of comic relief after last week’s post… We had another calf, a little bull calf from Matilda last Monday afternoon. Red, white faced with little red patches around both eyes just like momma. Somehow this week Matilda managed to find a four foot long piece of fence wire and get it knotted up in her tail. Here’s the comic relief (and admittedly maybe not the brightest) part… While she snacked at the hay ring I grabbed the end of the wire in one hand and held an open pocket knife in the other. I’m sure you can assume she wasn’t too excited about what was going on. For probably 10 full minutes she tried to lose me as I followed her around muddy lot, holding her tail outstretched, as I razored that knife back and forth through her tail hairs attempting to free the unwanted wire. If anyone had been watching I’m sure they would have stuck around expecting to see me face plant in the “mud” at any time. But you know what? There’s no wire in her tail any more!
