Today is football day! The first full day of regular NFL games. I am a huge Kansas City Chiefs fan and got to enjoy opening night on the comfy couch watching their first win of the season. I let Lando stay up just a little later than he would usually get to so that he could watch part of the game too. Today though we’re all going over to a friend’s to enjoy the games together and enjoy some good football snacks- wings, meatballs (which I should probably put in the slow cooker here soon if I want them to be done in time), pasta salad, and a good old fashioned veggie tray with dip. Watching TV all day is also the perfect opportunity to cook down some beef and chicken stock for canning hehe 🙂
Not much planned for Monday or Tuesday. Maybe we’ll finish cleaning up the garden. We still have tomato cages and bean supports out there that need to be taken down before we can run the bush hog through and prepare for fall. We’re thinking of doing some raised beds next spring but I’d like to get one built still for fall as kind of a test run. Maybe try some peas or greens that will do better with the cooler weather.
On Wednesday we will be working cattle in the evening after work. It probably sounds much more impressive that it really is. But…our four females enjoyed the company of the neighbor bull this summer and now it’s time to see how friendly they all got. A coworker is coming over to pregnancy check them and Ed and I plan on “trying our hands at it” too- literally. I mentioned it to Lando the other day. You can imagine his reaction when I told him you had to use your hand to manually feel if there was a calf! “Is he going to wear gloves?! I really hope he’s going to wear gloves, Mom!” I assured him that gloves would be worn. We’ll also band the little bull calf (“Buster”) that we got as part as my Mothers’ Day present. His mama (“Matilda”) is one that will be preg checked too. Hopefully we’ll be able to borrow the portable scale from the feedstore so we can get an idea on the steers’ weights and see if we’re on track for butchering in April and May.
Thursday will bring more football, but in the junior high school sense. Heather’s son earned a starting cornerback position this year so we’re going to take the opportunity to watch the team play a home game and cheer him on. I wonder if we’ll be able to do a mini tailgate session for dinner before hand?
I’m taking a vacation day from work on Friday in the hopes to get some extra cleaning and organizing done around here. Maybe prepare paperwork for taxes, start swapping out summer for winter clothes, but also some fun stuff like unclutter the insides of my kitchen cabinets, start a Christmas gift list, make a plan for building storage shelves in the garage. Lando is spending the night with a friend and Ed is working nights so maybe a little girls’ night out will be in order!
I’m REALLY looking forward to doing some yard sale shopping on Saturday morning! I work at the vet clinic every other Saturday. Couple that with the lack of yard sales this summer due to COVID and you end up with zero used treasures in the house. Maybe I can find a good farm auction to go to. It’s apple season at our local orchard so a quick trip there after getting Lando will be good inspiration for some fall baking and canning. Speaking of inspiration- I need to figure out what I’m going to do for the Best Dessert part of the Chili Cook-off next weekend at the campground. Pumpkin cookies? Something apple? Maybe something in the cast iron since we’ll be at a campground? Hmmm… I need to get ideas from Heather during a football break this afternoon…
